“Well did she make you cry
Make you break down
Shatter your illusions of love?
Is it over now? Do you know how
To pick up the pieces and go home?”

…Gold Dust Woman – Rumours, Fleetwood Mac (Recorded 1976, Released 1977)

When is the heart and soul of a woman revealed or a man for that matter? for women working in the sex industry in Australia do they lose their soul after all those men and do men lose their soul after all those women who work in the sex industry? It’s not love but is it an obsession or addiction to a certain type of sex or an absolute curiosity to a forbidden love not normally associated with a wife, girlfriend or a one night stand lover met at a party, bar or club? Swingers get close or are they just kidding themselves?

Not much has been written about the sex industry and the thousands of people involved on a daily business. It’s not just about the women who brave it into this industry for the lure of money but really the men who actively use the industry in growing numbers if finances permits.

In the relentless search for truth we (me myself and I the three of us) dived deep in the murky waters and fast flowing rivers of the sex industry on the Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney. It’s not really about that though it’s about a slipstream really, you get in it takes you for a long (or short) swift as a fox ride and then flicks you out the other side when you have had enough. Like most slipstreams (experienced cyclists know this best) when you catch the ride it can be an adrenaline and serotonin rush so addictive you want more and more especially if performance enhancing drugs are involved. Then it’s definitely a ride you want as a male to take again and again with beautiful (no holes barred sex) women with sexual appetites (so it appears ) you can’t believe it’s possible. But is it real? Sure it’s a type of reality, but is it real?

It’s taken me over five plus years to prepare for this post let alone write it. Much has to be taken into consideration and judgement is definitely not a word to use here. Women who brave it into the sex industry mostly do innocently I think even if they are not innocent type characters. It peels layers off their soul with a lot of these women who in some brothels and escorts can service easily 15-20 plus men per day everyday 6-7 days a week. Actress Betty White was so right when she quipped that famous quote of hers – “Why do people say “grow some balls”? Balls are weak and sensitive. If you wanna be tough, grow a vagina. Those things can take a pounding.”  Women are tough!

Like most things in life especially businesses there are many layers to each industry so the layer cake theory applies to the sex industry like it does any other industry. There are and always will be big players, small players, the pretenders, the gamers, the players, the drug dealers and the monsters… so it goes on. There is dark and light, good and bad. On the Gold Coast it used to be really dark but a swing shift was applied and that I am still dismantling to get past the peeled off layers of bullshit that can apply to the sex industry globally.

The layer cake in the sex industry is a bit like the Pareto principle (80/20 rule). There are really cheap girls, mid priced girls and there are really expensive girls. Each layer attracts a certain type of male clientele. Make no mistake there are a lot of fuckwit men out there who constantly use the sex industry and without the sex industry I often wonder how we as a society would cope if it didn’t exist? Also why is it pushed into the darkness mostly, hidden, not really candidly discussed when it serves a purpose that most people are blissfully ignorant of? Ignor-ance!

Also what are the reasons for all those variable and different state laws for prostitution in QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, WA etc. Each State of Australia has it’s very different, yet some similar and defined (actually some are very cloudy) boundaries of law for the sex industry workers. The huge amount of Asian women drawn to Australia to work as sex workers to fill a gaping hole? or did it create and blossom an industry still in its infancy? Now that is an interesting question because when you get to meet and talk with these women many many women reveal many different stories. Most are just trying to survive in a world with a global fascination for sex. Paid for sex that is.

When I was preparing for this post I decided not mention names, prices and or places to go to. This was not going to be an answer for peoples ignorance, if people reading this were interested they might search themselves for those answers if it interested or it intrigued them enough.

Getting back to the losing of the soul. I have met some women who don’t have a soul anymore it has at sometime abandoned them like a wounded passenger seeking attention but getting ignored it eventually leaves. There is a point there like with most things in life when you go past the do not enter sign you engage with the slipstream of no return and I fear at that point you cannot return to claim thy soul, it has gone and left you forever. Your eyes change and that sparkle has gone only a black darkness remains, that infinite darkness of the universe that surrounds us. The light, the sun has been eclipsed forever. There is only passion no compassion.

If you are thinking of dabbling in the sex industry know this. One cannot dabble in the sex industry it is not a bright corridor or a hallway it is indeed often a big poorly lit room which you will pay a price for. A price to pay whether your a client or not. Such is life.
